Project Introduction
Portraiture is many different things portraits have been changed throughout the years. we looked at portraits through history the first types of portraits only the rich was able to get there photo taken during the time and you had to sit and wait. However portraits have changed a lot during time many people take up the role of a photographer now as it is easy to access a camera now as technology has changed a lot of people now have cameras. We looked at other photographers such as Nico Frour he takes environment portraits of his surroundings and he uses very bright colours we have also looked at work from Tyler Mitchell he uses young people in his photos and uses very bright colours to balance the photos out.
The first known photographic portrait
These photographs are similar with the faded look however there is more different like the colour of the 2 two images the people in the picture is both different One of the portraits are a selfie and the other is a portrait. The images are framed where there both of center. Robert Cornelius set up his camera at the back of his family store , cornelius took the image by removing the lens cap and running into the frame where he sat for a minute before covering the lens up again.Bayard developed his own method of taking photographs called the direct positive process. In Bayard's photo you can notice a hat next to him. Robert Cornelius used a daguerreotype camera and Bayard exsposed silver chloride paper to light which turned the paper black.Roberts photo is just his head because its a self portrait just him.
I remember the first portrait but 'Le Desespere' which I saw within school. The portrait was a painting and it was a close up. The most obvious thing was the way that he was posed with his hands above his head and his eyes popping out. I would describe the photograph as unusual but I notice that the light has been captured by the painter well. I can imagine the same form of light if it was a photograph. I think that this painting with the pose was ahead of time as it was so unusual.
I found the task easy as i new on what i wanted for my Photos and the composing off the photos
first portrait i saw
The first photograph was taken a long time ago and is often reflected on at the start of a new school year. The other photos are from a place that we go to every year during the holidays and we get that dessert as its something we only get when we are on holidays as we only go there ones a year these are often reflected on as its something we do at a start of a school year
Nico Froehlich Workshop
During the workshop we was taken environmental portraits and we done this around the school. i found this task enjoy able as i came out with some very nice photos i think all of them are successful as all of them look nice this task i found you had to be quick to get the photo if not the photo wouldn’t be natural all these were natural as you can see from the persons body movements these are some of my favourites as they didn’t know they were being photographed this gave them the naturally movement they were being there self not acting in-front of a camera.
Nico Froelich takes portraits around south east London, he takes photographs of the people around him because he thinks they look nice or there lighting around the. Nico frames his portraits using the light and his surroundings and the background of the people with him.his backgrounds are important because it shows what is happening in peoples daily life the background is also important as the lighting provides a different perspective on the image. He wants to build a view on the sounding of him like a chicken shop and the people in his images are backdropped for the lighting
Nico Froelich inspired homework
Tyler Michael
Tyler Mitchell wanted to take pictures of people of colour to show them from a different view rather then what the media shows them. There are no images like theses ones These photos are not often seen in the media as people of colour are not seen in this way. He denied history and projects the image for the world to see is an important act.Tyler wants to have his images to have freedom he wants to change the idea of lack of representation as usually these images have been denied. Tyler Mitchell wishes that all the people in his images are subvert , that no one is different the image that everyone is equal. Tyler Mitchell tell his story from his childhood he was a only child contrary to the narrative creatives. Tyler Mitchell got his idea from Cuba as Cuba is full of bright colours. Tylers images are from his childhood and often takes photos of young people. He uses very bright colours throughout his photos and this is shown through the fashion. The colour is very important for his images and he also shows this through the background as he will use the light and the background eg flowers.in every photo he works collaborative with the person to make sure that the photograph is perfect
Central London Gallery Visit
when on the trip we took a train up to London and we went to a photographer gallery of Tyler Michaels we walked around two rooms and took images of his photos after that we visited another gallery by the photographer Chris Killip there was many floors with his photos i found Chris Killips photos because i found them more enjoyable as i liked the ideas better and the colour however the Tyler Mitchell photographs are different to what you normally see in a photograph
self portraits
We was set a task to take self portraits of reflections.I used the reflections of the picture frames and windows to get the photos.i used lines in the photos a lot as the door frames gave a good reflection. For the composition i stood further away from the door and with the reflection in the picture frame i stood closer.I think the spacing of the image was done well i think its worth remembering that the spacing is important in each photo
The Element Of Portraiture
We ere looking at elements of portraiture which are facial expression clothes poseur head and shoulders background
in the portraits we did a group of pictures of a family portrait a police photo and a airport picture.for the airport picture and the police photo i asked him if he could obscure his face to look more serious look with the airport photo we had a more basic look. I had to have the framing of his head in the middle and the the photo taken up close to him. I picked out a plane white background as for different types of portraits they follow rules like only a white background, no smiling. Fro the pose or stance i had him stand there with his arms by the side as i only needed his face.
the relationship of portraits in paintings
Today we do inspired photos of Tom Hunter first photo we done was saint Jerome in Medition we used a pipe to use as the other head and wrapped a sheet of cloth around it then we wrapped a red sheet alongside it and used another white sheet for the arm peace as there the portrait of the woman we used the same clothes and wrapped it around the head. We stared of to take the pictures indoors but then we saw the lighting outside so we used the light on the basketball court. To improve the photos we would need to change the background to a darker background. For the new photos i had the black backdrop and the light to emphasise on Alex's face. we refined the original pictures by experimenting with the backdrop and explored with the light
cyanotype research
The first person who made a cyanotype was John Herschel. He discovered and experimented with cyanotypes in 1840. The first person to actually use cyanotypes where Eadweard Muybridge. cyanotypes are a photographic process that produces blue prints using coated paper and light however you need a negative photo to turn into a cyanotype.
Photograms research
Photogrames is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light sensitive material then exposing it to light. any thing can go onto the photogram however its got to fit onto the sheet of paper an be exposed to light long another. For example some photographers who use photograms are man ray and Luigi Vernoesi. Vernoesi's photograms differ from man rays photograms is that he abstracts his photograms and design them in a different pattern however there photograms are allso similar in there colour and both use patterns through there photograms.Man ray used house hold items in his photograms he also clames he invented photograms. Man Ray man his photograms by placing objects like thumbtacks, coil wire and by exsposing the light sensitive paper to light its leaves a imprint onto the paper and gives it its design
Obscure self portraits
for these photographs i had to find objects from around the house to kind of blur my face (not make it as visible) this took some time to finish because i had to find the object to obscure then find a plain background to take these photos. With the first two photos i think are the best because of how the lighting was shined onto the drums we took many alterations of the photos i i think they came out the best as my face was obscured and the positioning of the camera was in a good position as well.
lighting workshop
Key Light- main light. Filament lamp- large light gets hot quickly. soft box- confines light from an artificial source into a wire frame box. Layer of translucent cloth used to make light less harsh. LED light- easier to work with dont get as hot can change the intensity on the arrows on the back you can clip Gels - coloured acetate - with bulldog clips on to change colour of the light. two toning- using two different colour gels on one subject For darker skin tones- best to use warm tones such as orange. There is a scale called the kelvin scale which measures light. (below) Barn doors- flaps on the side of the LED light used to manipulate the light. Can be unscrewed and moved. 2 point light systems- using 2 lights white reflects the light. if you had a white wall, the light and shadows is harder to control. Black absorbs light if you had a black background it will absorb the light it is easier to make shadows with a black background. Green background- used for green screening key framing, can replace the green with anything . Speedlight- is not a continuous light. it flashes when controlled by a trigger. A stop of light- A stop is a doubling or having of the amount of light let in when taking a photo. Shadow- the get the shadows is to move the light closer or further towards the subject Diffusion- is used to make the light less harsh for the subject.
these are the photos from are group we had experimented around with the light it took a lot of trial and error however after we found out how to balance out the dark light and the bright light
these photos were good as the light was reflected well against the camera. This was good as the sun light gave a different loook against the picture giving it a new look. Getting the pictures from a higher standard gives the photo more level towards it, the sun also gives the photo a nice clean cut across the person
Self portraits
Even though the the photos are in black and white you can still see the light exposure which gives the image life.the focus in the photos are all as none of the images are blurry and can see all the topics in the photos. the time it was taken looks during the day and in the 1960. As for the subjects in the photos there all self portraits and it looks like they are taken from events during his life.
these photos are nice as the sky was clear witch gave a better view this took a few tries as it was also windy. My favourite ones we of me on the ping pong table ass the sky is completely clear and the one of me blurred as it seems ominous, however the balancing of the environment gives the photo a subject
Rankin Destroy
Rankin wanted to portray these images into a limelight in a new perspective he says photograph is a lying.Rankin gets these artis and he takes photos of them and he makes them destroy graffiti the work they do all sorts to the photos this gives the photo more meaning it shows how they are felling insied. This type of photograph is a great media for advertising as people will be interested in these unique photos. photographs can create a striking image just from the pinpoint of the photo. The relationship between commerciual photograph and art photography is that the both strike a person in the same way within how it will strike someone on hoe impackfull it is. Its a great way for addvertising because they are so abstract within the photograph its drawing in the veiwer to take the time to look at it. We shouldnt
these are good photos as the sunlight was bright and it came across in lines this makes the photo look clearer.
Experimentation with different processes
in the lesson we had 4 experiment to do. One was to obscure a photo using a online service. This was the first one i tried i i believe that this photograph has been the best one out of the 4. The colours all are very vibrant all stand out. It gives of a gliched feeling to it. I think its the colours that makes the photo effective.
Self portrait homework
most of these photos were taken during my birthday so I was able to have a lot of photos taken. this involves the day out the meal we had and what I got. The photos of the golf took some thought as I wanted it to have some sort of a shadow and have the few of the background I think that photo came out very well
Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier hid her photos because she said that if she had not kept her image a secret people would have stolen miss-used them. She worked as a nanny for more then 40 years and took over 150000 photos in secret. she created more then 1000000 negatives and slides. john Maloof discovered all of her photos. These are all reflections
I was inspired by vivian mia for these photos. i used the reflections of different items around the house this was good as could try out different ways to take the photos for example with some of the mirrors i was able to have the image split in half. this was good as it gave a different view on the photo. and for some of them i had to completely change the angle for the photo. The photo did well on achieving its purpose as they look like the original photos.
Ziqianqian
for these images zinqianqian used self portraits she does this by exsposing part of her body and leaving the other half this creates a mystery in her photo as you cant see what she looks like
these photos were also reflections i had to make sure that i had a object in the photo this task was good as i was able to use different angles for the photos this gave different options to take photos as the reflections gave it different opinions to have
I believe that these photos are my best I have taken time to make sure the angles was right and to insure that the lighting was right. These ones are the best as the lighting and exposer of light is both there
these photos were also reflecting these took a while to do as i had to come up with a idea and then find a space to do it, this task was was interesting as i had to find objects around for the reflection and i wanted an other object to give the photo something else. This took me some time as finding the right object was important it would bring life to the photo.
these photos were reflections and we was tasked to take photos with a mirror this task was easy as the mirror was small enough to fit it into different places witch gave it different options to take photos.this took time as i had to get the positioning of the mirror and balance the mirror if i was to holed the mirror it would make the image distorted so i had to find a way to by passed it.
all these photos are done by a editor app and also self portraits this took time as i had to find the best looking filter to edit the original photo onto.
finale piece, practice
For my final piece i wanted to do some work on photoshop as this gives me different options to experiment with and i can get different out comes from the original photos. i am also experimenting with cyanotypes i like this concept as the blue makes the image stand out and this can create a more vibrant image and this gives a new look upon the original photograph
Evaluation practice
Vivian Maiers work is based on reflections her reflections are used to capture an image that also has a reflective surface. Her positioning is used of her self giving it a self portrait, she has her camera at waist level. The photo is landscape so its portrait. Her work was of negatives and after she died 100000 negatives were discovered. Her chosen camera was a twin lens Rolleiflex line. Vivian Maire largely shoot in black and white due to the time however this benefits her image
this is how i wish my cyanotypes will be presented as. I would like it to be mounted out on the black card i feel this will make the blue stand out on the black-card this will make it stand out from the rest as the blue and black will make this different from the rest.
i am planning on re doing the bottom three images as i didn’t leave them to rinse long enough. I believe it would look better if the bottom three images were lighter as it would show the image more clearly. I have re attempted two of the cyanotypes and they have came out better one of them had been in the water a little to longer however the other came out nice the image is more clearer. This was the initial idea was to have it on black card, However |
